Crochet & Hairpin Lace

Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials using a crochet hook made of different materials such as metal, wood, or plastic. The name derives from the French term crochet, meaning 'small hook'. The difference between crochet and knitting, beyond the tools used for their production, is that each stitch in crochet is completed before proceeding with the next one, while knitting keeps a large number of stitches open at a time. This technique was widespread in Europe during the 19th century, and even our grandmothers still used it as it was passed from generation to generation. Hairpin Lace is a lace making technique which was very popular in the Victorian times. This crochet technique gives much faster results when compared to the ordinary crochet technique. The final result is beautiful and easy to make which is perfect for those who want faster results of their work. It is done with a standard crochet hook and loom and the hairpin lace (sometimes called hairpin crochet) is formed by wrapping the yarn around the prongs of the loom to form a row of crochet stitches worked in the center, called the spine. The strips produced by this process are then joined together to create an airy and lightweight fabric. Various types of yarns and threads can be used to achieve different color, texture and design effects. Hairpin lace is used to make different items like scarves, shawls, hats, baby blankets, afghans, and clothing or it can also be added to sewn, knitted, and crocheted works as a decorative accent.

As the modern pace of life takes its toll, not many people today are familiar with these creative and unique techniques. I consider myself lucky to have had the best teacher, my grandmother, who was an expert in crochet and knitting. If you have interest to learn this artisanal method of creating a fabric from yarn with only one crochet hook, I invite you to join this workshop and I will be glad to share with you all the basic techniques that my grandmother taught me. This workshop embraces both, the Crochet  Basics and it's continuation the advanced stage of Hairpin Lace. Like all of our creative workshops, this one is also a very hands-on experience. In this workshop you will produce a crochet swatch with basic stitches which will help you to get the basic knowledge and a hairpin lace swatch which can give you additional ideas of how to create anything from ornamental objects to beautiful designs to wear. It is a great opportunity for friends and family members to enroll this course and enjoy creative quality time together!

Testimonials

"For me it was a challenging experience to learn crochet as I was tangling the yarn around, until I learned how to properly hold it. However Iskra was very patient with me and repeated the same technique many times. I cannot say that what I did today is a masterpiece of work, because I still need to practice so I can improve my technique, but a small step is a big step in a long time run”

-Lin J

“I am always interested to try new creative techniques, and start new projects. This one seems difficult at the beginning, but it is actually very simple as it keeps repeating. The best thing is that the work is easy portable around and I can easy continue working from where I have stopped. I am excited to start some more advanced project now.”
